ISO 50001:2018

The international standard ISO 50001 aims to help organizations determine the systems and processes needed to improve energy performance, incl. energy efficiency, use and consumption of energy. The implementation of this standard aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other related environmental impacts and energy costs through systematic energy management. ISO 50001 is applicable to all organizations, regardless of their type, size and activity.

ISO 50001 specifies the specific requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, planning and purchasing of equipment, human resources, etc., that contribute to energy performance.

It applies to all variables that affect energy performance and can be monitored and influenced by the organization.

ISO 50001 provides the system by which an organization can identify past, present and future energy consumption and develop an energy monitoring plan. Subsequently, the analysis of current and planned data will help to take action to improve energy management and efficiency. The standard has specific requirements for the measurement of energy consumption and the implementation of metering systems to document, report and validate continuous improvement in the field of energy management.

The structure of ISO 50001 is based on the general elements of ISO management standards and can be easily integrated with other management systems, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000, etc.

ISO 50001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework for continuous improvement and incorporates energy management into the daily activities of the organization.

ISO 50001 is applicable to any organization that wishes to ensure that it meets the stated energy policy and wishes to demonstrate this to others. This compliance can be confirmed either by self-assessment and own declaration of conformity, or by certification of an Energy Management System by an external organization.
